Chelsea

Robbie Keane’s stunning goal gave Spurs a thrilling point against Chelsea. Didier Drogba headed Chelsea in front after three minutes but Jonathan Woodgate rose to equalise for Spurs. Michael Essien’s clever finish restored Chelsea’s lead after 21 minutes and Joe Cole looked to have sealed the points with a third in the 52nd minute. Dimitar Berbatov’s header and a Tom Huddlestone strike put Spurs level, and after Cole hit his second, Keane curled in superbly two minutes from time.

Derby

Cristiano Ronaldo struck in the 75th minute to deny Derby a sensational draw - and send Manchester United top thanks to Arsenal’s draw with Middlesbrough. Wayne Rooney crossed for Ronaldo to volley home and spare United’s blushes. Ronaldo hit the post in the first half but United had debutant keeper Ben Foster to thank for twice keeping out Kenny Miller just before the break. After scoring the goal, Ronaldo skipped clean through, only to be denied by former United team-mate Roy Carroll.

Kolo Toure’s late strike salvaged a point for Arsenal against valiant Middlesbrough who had Mido sent off. Ex-Gunner Jeremie Aliadiere gave the visitors a shock lead when he converted Tuncay Sanli’s superb cross. But with just five minutes remaining Toure leapt highest to head in Cesc Fabregas’ corner from the right. Fabregas also had a shot blocked and a header hit the post before the last piece of action saw Mido sent off for a high tackle on Gael Clichy.

Reading

Liverpool notched a fifth successive Premier League victory after coming from behind to beat Reading at Anfield. Marek Matejovsky rounded off a free-kick move from 20 yards out to give Reading an early lead. Liverpool equalised in equally spectacular fashion when Javier Mascherano rifled his first goal for the club from 23 yards. Fernando Torres completed the turnaround by planting home an unmarked header from eight yards.

Chelsea saw off a spirited Sunderland side to claim a ninth win in 12 matches and keep their title bid on track thanks to John Terry’s towering header. Terry met Frank Lampard’s corner and forced the ball home at the near post for his first Blues goal in 19 months. But it was the Black Cats who had the best chances after the opening quarter. Blues keeper Carlo Cudicini made a superb stop to keep out Andy Reid’s curling free-kick and Kenwyne Jones missed a glorious close-range header.

Aston Villa

A delightful Jermain Defoe lob and a bizarre Nigel Reo-Coker own goal saw Portsmouth leapfrog Aston Villa in the Premier League table. Defoe neatly controlled Glen Johnson’s long ball to beat the culpable Scott Carson from the edge of the box. And Carson was at fault for the second when the goalkeeper’s clearance ended in the back of the net via Reo-Coker. Both teams ended the game with 10 men when Sulley Muntari and Olof Mellberg were sent off in separate incidents.

Substitute Freddie Sears’ late goal on his first-team debut handed West Ham their first win in three games at the expense of Blackburn at Upton Park. Rovers took the lead when Roque Santa Cruz converted Morten Gamst Pedersen’s cross with a diving header. England striker Dean Ashton equalised just before half-time when he slotted in from 12 yards out. And with just 10 minutes remaining, 18-year-old Sears nodded in after Brad Friedel parried his initial shot.

Liverpool left it late to take control of their Champions League tie against 10-man Inter Milan and ease the pressure on manager Rafael Benitez. Marco Materazzi harshly saw red on the half hour for two clumsy challenges on Fernando Torres, but Inter held firm. Torres forced a superb save from Julio Cesar, while Patrick Vieira was lucky not to concede a penalty for handball. But Dirk Kuyt eased home nerves with a deflected shot on 85 minutes and Steven Gerrard’s firm drive sealed a fine win.

Real Madrid

Battling Roma gave themselves a slender advantage after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night. Mancini was the hero for the hosts, firing home the winning goal in the 58th minute after David Pizarro’s first-half strike had cancelled out Raul’s opener. The result marked Roma’s first win against Real in the Italian capital at the fourth attempt and hands Luciano Spalletti’s side with a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg.
